| Resumo | Abstract. The construction of reservoirs generally produces plenty of changes to the river basin. This paper reports a research carried out to assess the actual situation of the cascading reservoir system built on the lower mid-section of the São Francisco river (Itaparica, Moxotó, Paulo Afonso system I-II-III, and Paulo Afonso IV). Water samples were collected in 23 stations throughout 1999 and 2000 near concurrently to satellite overpasses to determine the input of particulate matter. These data were integrated to climatic information to carry out a spatial (horizontal and vertical) and time-based (annual cycle) analysis. The results show seasonal influences (direct and indirect effects of rainfall) on the environmental variables, with greater input of particulate matter on the upper portion of the Itaparica reservoir and the shaping of a longitudinal gradient from the river to the dam. The use of spectral data made it possible to figure out the suspended sediment distribution pattern in the reservoirs at the rainy season. The results show that satellites images were extremely useful for understanding the spatial component of the environmental studies. |
